He has endured a lot to say the least. Reading and research made me stumble upon him, and the constant journalistic curiosity burning inside me prompted me to reach out and I’m glad I did.
A veteran of Manhattan’s 13th Precinct, he spent a combined 15 of his 20 years there across two stints (1987-1997, 2000-2005). A veteran of both Auto Crime and Major Case too, he faced many a tragedy but none perhaps more personal than the night of Monday, May 19, 1997 when his partner, Police Officer Anthony Sanchez was shot and killed in the line of duty responding to a robbery call in Manhattan.
He soldiered on in his friends memory and these days offers peer support to officers who’ve been through similar moments of pain. He is retired NYPD Detective Roy Ruland, and I’ll be very fortunate to interview him for Episode 263 of the Mic’d In New Haven Podcast.
