He spent 23 years in emergency work on the fast paced streets of New York City. Joining the FDNY in February of 1979, his 20 years with the department were spent in a slew of different assignments, each adding key experience and acumen which would help in his next assignment as a Deputy Commissioner in New York City’s Office of Emergency Management in 1999. He stayed there until 2002 when he retired and currently operates his own consulting business Rotanz & Associates and that for another volume of The Best of The Bravest: Interviews With The FDNY’s Elite is retired FDNY Captain Richard A Rotanz
