“Sometimes you’d rather be lucky than good” Firefighting is ultimately a career full of moments like that. Little details leading to large outcomes. In 35 years on the job from 1966 until 2001, few have as good of an understanding of that as Deputy Chief Joe DiBernardo.

He was on my wish list for a while in terms of potential guests I’d been in hot pursuit of, and ultimately I am glad I finally landed him. Well worth the wait. Great chat for Volume 59 of The Best of The Bravest: Interviews with The FDNY’s Elite.

In Memory Of:
Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Jr.
(End of Watch: November 22, 2011)

Outro Song: Elton John – Rocket Man (Live at Madison Square Garden, NYC, October 21, 2000)
