If you’ve ever seen the French Connection, you’re familiar with the iconic car scene, the movie came out in 1971.
Ironically that same year, Lt. Commander Vernon Geberth, then a detective, lived a real life version of it. Interrupting a midday mob hit involving a heist of diamonds, he not only chased the murderous mobsters through the streets of Little Italy, he had a running gun battle with them to match.
