🔥 “What did I get myself into?”
In Episode 401 of Mic’d In New Haven — The Best of The Bravest: Volume 84 — Deputy Chief Fred LaFemina takes us back to his first day in the FDNY.
What began as a routine pull box quickly turned into a working fire in a two-story private dwelling. Flames venting from multiple windows. A man on fire on the second floor. A baby being lowered from a window into the yard. Truck companies forcing entry and emerging with unconscious children in their arms.
Standing in the hallway waiting for water, LaFemina remembers thinking he might not make it out. Instead, the line moved, the fire was knocked down, and his career began with two 10-45s on the very first run of his FDNY life.
Some firefighters wait decades to see a job like that. For Fred LaFemina, it was Day One.
Outro Song: Go West – King of Wishful Thinking (1992)
