In Episode 406 of Mic’d In New Haven — The E-Men: Inside The NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit (Volume 57) — retired New York City Department of Correction Emergency Service Unit veteran Bob Kauer discusses one of the most physically demanding and intense aspects of the job: cell extractions.

Facing inmates who were often violent, unpredictable, or suffering from severe mental illness, ESU officers had to rely on disciplined teamwork and strict procedure. A coordinated team would enter, control the subject quickly, secure them in restraints, and move on to the next assignment — sometimes performing dozens of extractions in a single day.

Kauer emphasizes that despite the chaos and danger, the mindset remained professional and procedural.

“It’s nothing personal. It’s just business. We do our job the way it’s supposed to be done.”
