At just 19 years old and fresh out of EMT school, Mike Granton got thrown into the deep end — delivering a baby in a Brooklyn walk-up with nothing but an OB kit, a pair of medic shears, and a whole lot of nerves.

From panic to relief, this unforgettable first call still stands out decades later.

A fantastic Volume 52 of The E-Men: Inside The NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit this was.

This was an excellent interview. Mike Granton, you brought back many memories from long ago and you are always a great storyteller. I really enjoyed this interview. Mike Colon, another super job. Thank you.

And for the record, all the early days paramedic units , starting with Jacobi Class 1, had those police light bars mounted on the back. The jobs were done on the side by the NYPD shop in Maspeth. Our mechanics hated them because they burned out the batteries and alternators all the time. But they made the paramedic trucks conspicuous and kept us safe in the days when ambulances only had two red flashers in the back.
