This week on Mic’d In New Haven, it’s another volume of Best of The Bravest: Nationwide Edition — and my guest is Tyler Whittredge.

Raised in a third-generation volunteer firefighting family, Tyler grew up immersed in the culture, traditions, and expectations of the fire service. His career has taken him through volunteer departments, live-in firehouse programs, industrial firefighting, fire protection system design, and now career service as a firefighter-paramedic.

Along the way, experiences on the fireground led him to ask deeper questions about leadership, mentorship, motivation, and the unwritten standards that shape young firefighters early in their careers. Those questions ultimately became the foundation for his book, From Probation to Professional.

It’s a conversation about culture, leadership, and the journey from learning the job to truly becoming a professional.
