This week on Mic’d In New Haven, it’s another volume of The Best of The Bravest: Interviews with The FDNY’s Elite — and my guest is retired FDNY Assistant Chief Al Turi.

Chief Turi spent more than 33 years with the FDNY, beginning as a firefighter in the Bronx in 1968 and ultimately rising through the ranks to Assistant Chief. His career took him from engine companies and serving as a chief’s aide to company command, Battalion 9, Division 3, and senior leadership assignments at Department headquarters, the Bureau of Health Services, and the Bureau of Training.

Along the way, he witnessed some of the most transformative periods in FDNY history — from the fires, fiscal crisis, and layoffs of the 1970s to helping prepare the department for Y2K and eventually serving as Chief of Safety.

More than three decades of fire duty, command, training, and safety — and a firsthand perspective on how the FDNY evolved through an extraordinary era.
