This week on Mic’d In New Haven, it’s another volume of The Beat: Profiles of Police Nationwide — and my guest is New Haven Chief of Police David Zannelli.

Chief Zannelli began his law enforcement career in 2006 in Middletown, Rhode Island, before joining the New Haven Police Department in 2008. From walking a beat in the Dwight, Kensington, and West River neighborhoods, he went on to serve in Street Interdiction and alongside the ATF before beginning a steady climb through virtually every level of leadership within the NHPD.

Sergeant. Lieutenant. Captain. Assistant Chief. And now, Chief of Police.

Along the way, he’s overseen Major Crimes, Homicide, Internal Affairs, Professional Standards and Training, Patrol Operations, and the Detective Bureau — giving him a perspective on the department that few others possess.

In May 2026, after nearly two decades serving the Elm City, that journey culminated with his unanimous confirmation as New Haven’s permanent Chief of Police.

From patrol officer to the department’s top cop — we’re talking about the experiences that shaped him, the evolution of policing in New Haven, and his vision for the department he now leads.
