Retired NYPD Detective First Grade Paul Morrison, author of Knock-Knock, recalls an armed confrontation that turned into a desperate exchange of gunfire.
After calling for assistance near Teller Avenue in the Bronx, Morrison found himself confronting armed individuals inside a vehicle.
Suddenly, a passenger emerged from the opposite side of the car and opened fire, sending a bullet just over Morrison’s head.
With the suspect attempting to take cover behind the vehicle, Morrison made a split-second decision.
He fired directly through the glass, striking the gunman.
The encounter was far from over.
The driver then exited the vehicle, and Morrison fired again, striking him in the torso before the man fled. After reloading and approaching the vehicle, Morrison found the wounded passenger on the ground as backup officers arrived.
Among those responding was a former partner who helped bring the situation under control.
