This week on Mic’d In New Haven, my guest is retired NYPD Detective First Grade Terry McGhee, whose remarkable 36-year career took him from the streets of the Bronx to the front lines of the global war on terrorism.

Before ever putting on an NYPD uniform, Terry was a championship amateur boxer and a Sergeant with the United States Army’s legendary 82nd Airborne Division.

Joining the NYPD in 1987, he would survive being shot during a car stop and go on to serve in Anti-Crime, robbery investigations, the Street Crime Unit, and the Bronx Homicide Task Force.

But in September of 2001, his career would take a dramatic turn when he joined the FBI-NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Over the next 22 years, Terry’s investigations would take him around the world, targeting senior Al Qaeda leadership and ultimately serving as the primary investigator in the case that led to the conviction of Sulaiman Abu Ghayth, Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law.

From championship boxing and the 82nd Airborne to surviving a shooting on the streets of New York, investigating murders in the Bronx, and hunting international terrorists — we’re talking about one extraordinary career.

That’s retired NYPD Detective First Grade Terry McGhee, on the Mic’d In New Haven Podcast.
