This week on Mic’d In New Haven, it’s another installment of Tales From The Boom Room: Inside The NYPD Bomb Squad — and my guest is retired NYPD Bomb Squad Detective and former Emergency Service officer Rich Henderson.
Rich’s nearly 23-year career with the NYPD began in January 1995, serving in Police Service Area 7 in the Bronx before making the jump to the department’s elite Emergency Service Unit in 2001.
Assigned to Emergency Service Squad 3, Rich spent eight years handling some of the city’s most dangerous emergencies, including serving during the September 11th era, while also completing the NYPD’s Counter Sniper School.
In 2009, he made the transition to the NYPD Bomb Squad, where his training would take him to the FBI’s Hazardous Device School before spending the remainder of his NYPD career responding to explosive-related emergencies and investigations.
Along the way, he would team up with his four-legged partner, K9 Easy, before retiring in 2017 and continuing his bomb disposal career with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
From the streets of the Bronx to the Emergency Service Unit, from tactical operations to the dangerous world of explosives — we’re talking about a career spent answering the call when the stakes couldn’t be higher.
That’s Rich Henderson, on Tales From The Boom Room: Inside The NYPD Bomb Squad — only on the Mic’d In New Haven Podcast.
