This week on Mic’d In New Haven, it’s a special edition of The Beat: Profiles of Police Nationwide — featuring two retired FBI agents whose careers took them from the streets of the United States to some of the Bureau’s most sensitive tactical, counterterrorism, and overseas operations.

My guests are retired FBI Special Agent Gary Uher and retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent Ed Deck.

Before joining the FBI in 1990, Uher served in local law enforcement with the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department and the Haledon and Ridgewood Police Departments in New Jersey. His Bureau career would include organized crime, fugitive investigations, advanced surveillance, the Special Operations Group, and SWAT — eventually taking him overseas following the U.S. Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, to Yemen during the investigation into the bombing of the USS Cole, and to Iraq, where he worked alongside U.S. and coalition intelligence agencies.

Deck’s career began in the United States Marine Corps, where he served for five years and was commissioned as an infantry officer before joining the FBI in 1987. Over the next 24 years, he investigated organized crime, violent crime, and domestic and international terrorism while spending more than a decade with the FBI New York SWAT Team. His assignments included the Atlanta Olympic bombing, the Unabomber investigation, and the East Africa Embassy bombings before taking him to FBI Headquarters, oversight of Bureau operations at Guantanamo Bay, and ultimately service as the FBI’s senior liaison to the military’s Joint Special Operations Command.

Two careers. Decades of service. SWAT, surveillance, organized crime, terrorism investigations, and operations spanning the globe.

That’s retired FBI Special Agent Gary Uher and retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent Ed Deck, together on The Beat: Profiles of Police Nationwide — only on the Mic’d In New Haven Podcast.
